Position Details

The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens is one of Melbourne's most beautiful and historic cultural heritage venues and includes the National Herbarium of Victoria and the Melbourne Observatory. Founded in 1846, an important science institution, its world renowned picturesque landscape extends across 36 hectares, with over 90 buildings and structures, many being listed on the State's Heritage Register.

This role is within the Infrastructure and Facilities Branch, which has the broad objective to maintain the built environment to a high standard, in a safe and serviceable condition, complementing and helping to enrich the overall Melbourne Gardens experience.

In this role you will be responsible for supporting and assisting the Team Leader Infrastructure with core infrastructure management functions at Melbourne Gardens including hands-on maintenance of hard landscape and infrastructure related built assets; effective and safe operation of specialised plant and equipment; proactive maintenance and repair of equipment or machinery; providing infrastructure and organisational information and advice; maintaining accurate records of plant and equipment operation and infrastructure condition; assist with job costing and procurement; and working collaboratively as part of a team.

Success Criteria

To be the successful candidate for this position you will have:

  • A keen interest in the infrastructure servicing profession at a vibrant and diverse public facing site supported by appropriate equivalent trade certificates, qualification or relevant proven experience in the industry
  • Experience in the safe and effective operation of a wide range of specialist plant and infrastructure maintenance equipment, and competency with construction tools and specialised equipment (both on land and on water)
  • Experience in maintenance of hard landscape to agreed standards, solving problems to meet project and maintenance goals
  • Experience in the provision of high quality customer service to visitors and other clients in a tourist destination, including the ability to communicate regulations in a courteous and professional manner
  • Knowledge of software packages such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, including effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate appropriately to various audiences and to clearly provide professional infrastructure maintenance and plant and equipment operation advice
  • Ability to work as a constructive member of a team, and to supervise and train apprentices, internship students, volunteers or other staff
