About the organisation

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) creates livable, inclusive and sustainable communities that support jobs and growth in Victoria. DELWP has distinct legislative obligations to Traditional Land Owner groups that are paramount in its responsibilities in managing Victoria's resources, and works with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities across the State to care for country. In 2016 DELWP launched its Aboriginal Inclusion Plan, Munganin-Gadhaba, with the role of Director, Aboriginal Inclusion Support created to support the successful implementation of this plan.

About the role

Reporting to the Executive Director Policy and Planning, in DELWP's  Forest, Fire and Regions Group, the Director Aboriginal Inclusion Support will provide leadership and strategic direction to executives and senior managers across DELWP. Collaborating with all department portfolios, the appointee will identify strategies and programs to effectively build relationships and partner with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Victorians, and foster Aboriginal inclusion to improve Aboriginal employment, cultural wellbeing and economic prosperity. In this dynamic and high-profile role, the Director will build, lead and mentor a team of six with responsibility for program delivery support, monitoring, policy development, research and analytics.

About you

To be successful in this role you will be articulate and energetic, an enabler and a natural mentor with exceptional relationship development skills and a focus on outcomes and opportunities. You will bring with you a wealth of knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures, and a proven ability to engage with Traditional Owners and build Aboriginal community capacity. Your understanding of State and national policy frameworks, government process and good governance has been gained through working in a leadership position in government. You relish the opportunity to make a difference across DELWP and Victoria's Aboriginal communities, environments, landscapes and heritage.

Specialist/Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and society and ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.
  • Experience in drawing upon research and evidence about what it takes to effectively engage Aboriginal people and build Aboriginal community capacity with a community development approach.
