Position Details

As a Natural Environment Program Officer, you will provide high quality advice on biodiversity related matters to support decision making for statutory referrals, with a focus on Victorian government infrastructure projects, including major road and rail projects delivered by the Major Road Projects Authority, Rail Projects Victoria, North East Link, the Level Crossing Removal Authority and other infrastructure agencies.

The role requires technical expertise in the management of flora and fauna, as well as a sound understanding of applicable policies and legislation, including the Victorian native vegetation regulations, the Planning and Environment Act 1987, the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, the Environmental Effects Act 1978, the Major Transport Project Facilitation Act 2009, and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

The successful applicant will have a proven ability to solve complex issues and problems, work on a wide range of tasks with variable deadlines, and work in a team environment. They will demonstrate good influence and negotiation skills and an ability to provide advice to, and build relationships with, a wide variety of stakeholders including industry, consultants, other government agencies, and the community.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in science or natural resource management is desirable.
  • Good technical understanding of legislation and policy relevant to biodiversity in Victoria is mandatory (specifically in the operation of the Victorian native vegetation regulations and the Victorian planning provisions, the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, the Environmental Effects Act 1978 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999).
  • Experience in environmental impact assessment (particularly threatened species) is highly desirable.

There are two fixed term positions until 30 August 2027. The work location for this position is Knoxfield with hybrid work arrangements available.
