Position Details

The Senior Solicitor works as part of a highly skilled legal team in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, working closely with the department's seven functional groups and the Solar Victoria business to support the delivery of priority policy initiatives, programs and operations to the Victorian community in a way that both optimises success and minimises and mitigates risks for government.

This role is for an experienced lawyer who can work with minimal supervision in the delivery of advice and management of litigation in areas including planning, environment, heritage, administrative law, statutory interpretation and compulsory acquisition.

The role will also be exposed to work in government operations and the department's broader areas of legal practice. The Senior Solicitor may lead discrete projects, supervise and mentor more junior solicitors from time to time, and work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams.

The role will suit a team player who is solution focused, builds and maintains strong relationships with stakeholders and who is looking for a satisfying role in an engaging, dynamic legal practice.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • An Australian lawyer within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria), holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and litigation management on complex issues with minimal supervision in one or more of the following key practice areas: administrative law and statutory interpretation, planning, environment and heritage.
  • Experience in either broader general in-house government legal practice or some of the department's areas of specialisation (contracting and procurement, infrastructure projects, property (Crown land use and development), energy, building, natural resources management and emergency management) is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in developing and delivering bills and regulations is desirable but not essential.
