Position Details
This Casual position will provide science support for the Soil Science branch of Agriculture Victoria Research (AVR), based at the Ellinbank SmartFarm. The Junior Scientist is primarily required to assist with the implementation of specialised manure, soil and pasture research including novel treatments for manure, anaerobic digestion research, gas emissions measurement at different scales in the laboratory, as well as from plot and paddock experiments. This research will include implementing complex sampling and analysis protocols and data collection, sample preparation according to specific criteria as well as data analysis. The appointee will be required to use and test innovative experimental and commercial technologies that have applicability for the Agricultural sector. The appointee will assist in reporting on the research particularly with the preparation of scientific publications and other written reports. The applicant will need to be flexible and be willing to assist other work groups and students located at Ellinbank and elsewhere with research and innovation activities.
Accountabilities
- Provide science support to research projects, including the implementation of complex protocols, taking measurements, processing samples and undertake analysis of experimental data as required, including contributing information for the preparation of technical reports (using Microsoft Office and other programs).
- Operate state-of-the-art research equipment and technologies in a safe manner as outlined in standard operating procedures.
- Manage experimental data and maintain records (electronic and hard copy) ensuring adherence to established data quality guidelines.
- Adopt and apply WH&S policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- To practice cultural safety by creating environments, relationships and systems free from racism and discrimination so that people can feel safe, valued and able to participate.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- Essential: An appropriate degree in Agricultural Science, Science, or an equivalent science qualification.
- Desirable: A post-graduate qualification in a relevant science discipline such as agronomy, grazing ecology, or ruminant nutrition (candidates who have submitted their thesis are encouraged to apply).
This is a casual position available for a period until 1 June 2025. The work location for this position is Ellinbank SmartFarm.
