The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Environmental Programs Officer to provide a critical role within Corrections and Justice Services.
About the Business Unit
Beechworth Correctional Centre (BCC) is a Corrections Victoria, minimum security male prison located in Beechworth Northeast Victoria, within the Hume Region of the Department of Justice and Community Safety.
Corrections Victoria develops and implement policies, programs, and services to ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners, that seek to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.
Corrections Victoria manages Community Correctional Services locations across the state and is responsible for managing Victoria's public prisons and overseeing the contracts relating to the management of the privately-operated prisons. In doing so, Corrections Victoria delivers a safe and secure corrections system that actively engages offenders and the community to promote positive behaviour change.
About the Role
The Environmental Programs Officer works to help identify, improve, update, and deliver an environmental strategy that will assist BCC operate within the requirements of Environmental Compliance legislation, regulation, policies and procedures and to reduce harm to the natural environment and the health of prisoners, employees and the local community.
The position will assist in the supervision of the prisons environmental projects including but not limited to the Recycling Program, Raptors, Sewing and the Dog Rescue Programs and be involved in the delivery of general environmental services.
The position will work with community, stakeholders and provide prisoners with an opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge that can be utilised post release in relation to environmental management.
Facial Hair Policy: All prison officers will be required (subject to a small number of exemptions) to be clean shaven for the purposes of wearing, if required in an emergency, the donning of a breathing apparatus.
A Pre-Employment Health Assessment is a pre-requisite of this role.
Some of your duties will include:
- Assist in the delivery of the environmental strategy for Beechworth Correctional Centre in line with DCI 9.20 - Mandatory Environmental Compliance.
- Assist in the supervision of the Raptors, Sewing, Dog Rescue Programs and the Re-cycling program.
- Ensure all prisoners are assigned adequate work and instruct them regarding environmental management programs or works.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Relevant knowledge of Environmental Management Policies
- Other relevant skills, experience relating to the environment, project management, engineering, or similar fields, are highly desirable.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Prison Officer pre-training course or willingness to complete this training at the next available course.
- Completion of Environmental management training would be highly regarded.
