The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer to provide a critical role at Tarrengower Prison.

About the Business Unit

Department of Justice & Community Safety comprises of eight regions, through which compliance, enforcement and regulatory services are provided to the Victorian community.

The Loddon Mallee Region provides services at Justice Service Centres in Bendigo, Swan Hill, Echuca and Mildura. The region has three prisons, Loddon Prison a medium risk facility and Middleton a restricted minimum facility in Castlemaine. The third prison Tarrengower is a minimum risk facility located in Maldon.

Tarrengower Prison is a minimum security female prison facility focused on the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners back into the community. Tarrengower's emphasis is on release preparation and community reintegration through the provisions of programs within a rehabilitative environment. Tarrengower emphasises the principles of a healthy prison where children can be accommodated with their mothers ensuring the family unit is maintained and developed. Tarrengower strongly recognises cultural diversity, respecting individual religious, spiritual and cultural beliefs.

About the Role

Prison Industry Officers are responsible for the management and delivery of specific functions within a prisoner industry or service industry under the guidance of a Prison Industry Supervisor. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate prisoners. Highly developed communication, negotiation and problem solving skills.

The Industry Officer will assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures. The industry officer will assist with the operational aspects of prison industry and services industries to achieve commercial production targets and meet customer expectations including, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records.

The role is responsible for conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information and preparing reports. A prison Industry Officer plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to offender management and security management.

Some of your duties will include:

• Lead and manage prisoners and prison officers in the industrial areas of the prison.
• Maintain the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility through compliance of security and safety procedures incorporating appropriate levels of prisoner monitoring and surveillance
• Monitor and achieve production targets in a complex trade or industrial environment.

• Skills or qualifications in Horticulture, Farming, Manufacturing or hospitality would be an advantage.

Qualifications/requirements

• Trade qualifications or equivalent relevant trade skills is desirable.
