About the Business Unit:

H.M. Prison Langi Kal Kal is a minimum-security men's protection prison located 140klm west of Melbourne at Trawalla. The prison's primary purpose is to prepare male prisoners for transition, reintegration, and release. As a working farm with eight separate industries, there is a strong focus on employment, training, and work readiness.

About the Role:

The Recreation Officer is part of the Vocational Services Team. The role of this team is to prepare prisoners for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities, targeted educational opportunities and personal development programs and activities.

Reporting to the Senior Recreation Officer, the Recreation Officer will coordinate, facilitate, and supervise a range of recreational activities and programs for prisoners providing instruction, coaching, and training.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Coordinating, facilitating and supervising a range of recreational activities and programs for prisoners providing instruction, coaching, and training
  • Assessing recreation requirements of general and special needs prisoners to inform development of recreation programs for individuals and groups
  • Communicate with and give directions to prisoners in a respectful and motivational manner, respond to prisoner complaints and requests, and provide pro-active assistance and guidance to prisoners as required.

About You:

  • Experience developing and delivering passive and active recreation programs
  • Understanding of the constraints of working within a prison environment
  • An understanding of your own performance goals and how they are linked to broader operational needs while supporting others to achieve their goals. You will also demonstrate empathy and contribute to the wellbeing and motivation of team. You will understand and act in accordance to public sector values, ethics, and codes of conduct.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Prison Officer Pre-Service Training (or willingness to complete this training)
