About us

Department of Justice and Community Safety comprises of eight regions, through which compliance, enforcement and regulatory services are provided to the Victorian community. 

The Loddon Mallee Region provides services at Justice Service Centres in Bendigo, Swan Hill, Echuca and Mildura and at outreach locations across the region, including Castlemaine, Maryborough, Kerang, Robinvale, Kyneton and Ouyen.  The region also has three prisons, two within the Loddon Prison and Middleton which includes a medium risk facility (Loddon) and a restricted minimum facility (Middleton). The third prison is located at Maldon, a minimum risk women's facility; Tarrengower Prison.  

The region delivers a range of Justice Services including custodial services at our prison, community corrections services, Sheriff's operations, consumer affairs and front of house enquiries (including Births, Deaths and Marriages applications).  Corporate Governance and Support is responsible for providing the Loddon Mallee Region with a range of corporate support functions including Human Resources, Finance and Procurement, Facilities Management, Administration and Workforce Development. 

About the role

In a prison environment, the Justice Officer provides a range of corporate support services, within the unique operational environment of a correctional facility. In either environment, the role requires a strong focus on customer service, teamwork, integrity, accuracy, compliance and timeliness. 

In the Loddon Mallee Region, the Justice Officer role specialises in one of three streams – Human Resources, Finance, and Business Support. Over time, there may be an opportunity to work in one or more of these streams, on a rotational basis, enabling career development opportunities and operational flexibility to the region. 

This position may require direct prisoner contact and will involve weekend and public holiday work, remuneration is in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Enterprise Agreement.

Some of your duties may include:

  • contribute to the delivery of personnel and payroll services to Loddon Mallee Region Prisons
  • prepare, maintain and distribute the duty roster on a fortnightly basis, adjust entries as required
  • coordinate the duty roster on a daily basis, processing leave and updating the roster to ensure minimum staffing levels are met.

About you

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • well-developed computer literacy 
  • knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations 
  • demonstrated experience in Payroll systems
  • the ability to seek resolution of problems through policy or process guidelines
  • well-developed interpersonal skills


  • Experience using CHRS21 and Time Target will be highly regarded

Upon commencement of employment with the department you will be required to provide evidence that you have an up-to-date vaccination status within the timelines specified by the department into the DJCS Service Portal. This includes evidence of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).

  1. COVID-19 digital certificate or ATAGI exemption certificate (available via your myGov account)
  2. Your immunisation history statement (available via your myGov account)

Other documentation outside the above will not be accepted as evidence of having received your COVID-19 vaccine doses.
