Position overview

The Senior Lawyer will provide support to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) as it transitions to become the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC), and an integrated regulator.

The Building and Plumbing Commission will bring together core consumer facing, investigative and registration and licensing functions with domestic building insurance and the domestic building dispute resolution system.

You will be working in the Advice and Legislation Team, which is one of two teams that make up the Legal Unit. The work is interesting and diverse, and you will have an opportunity to influence the direction of the brand new, Victorian building regulator.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone who consistently provides high quality operationally minded and fit for purpose legal advice in a timely and client focused way. The role is suited to lawyers with approximately 4+ years post admission experience.

We will be looking for the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Previous experience working in the policy to law process.
  • Thoroughness, accuracy and reliability in the provision of public law and organisational advice.
  • Experience with statutory interpretation especially of the Building Act and regulations and Domestic Building Contracts Act.
  • Experience working alongside a variety of stakeholders.

About the Team

We are an enthusiastic, high performing team made up of lawyers with significant experience from within and outside the organisation. We are kind, supportive and generous with our time and expertise.

About the organisation

The VBA is entering an exciting new phase – as we expand our regulatory footprint and amalgamate with allied and complementary services to become the Building and Plumbing Commission. We are refocussing all our regulatory activities towards better consumer protection and greater support of practitioners through targeted education and engagement.

The VBA regulate Victoria's building and plumbing industries, and you can find further information about our role, annual reports, structure, careers and other activities at: https://www.vba.vic.gov.au/about
