About VIFM

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority providing world-leading forensic medical and scientific services for the State of Victoria. Our work spans the full cycle of forensic practice — delivering clinical and scientific services, learning from this work, and driving research and teaching.

Within the Medical Services Division, our Clinical Forensic Medicine (CFM) program delivers critical frontline care to people affected by crime, individuals in police custody, and those in custodial and justice settings. Working with Victoria Police, hospitals, sexual assault services, and multiple justice agencies, the CFM team provides a unique blend of medicine, public service, and community impact.

Role Overview

The CFM Regional Service Lead & Medical Administration Registrar combines day-to-day leadership of regional Clinical Forensic Medicine services with broad involvement in medical administration. The role oversees the regional on-call workforce, supports quality and safety, develops capability across regional teams, and strengthens partnerships with key agencies. Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer, it also contributes to clinical governance, credentialing, accreditation, incident management, service improvement, and policy development. The position requires regular travel across metropolitan and regional sites and provides extensive exposure to the operational and strategic functions of a statewide forensic medical service.

About the Role

This is a rare chance for a RACMA trainee and emerging medical leader to step into a leadership position while being directly mentored by senior medical executives (FRACMAs). You will gain hands-on experience in all core domains of medical administration, including:

  • Regional service leadership – ensure the effective delivery of 24/7 CFM services across regional Victoria by coordinating the workforce, supporting practitioners, and maintaining consistent, safe operations across multiple sites. Work closely with the CFM Head of Service to address operational issues, strengthen local processes, and ensure regional services run reliably and efficiently.
  • Clinical governance and quality – managing the CFM incident management system, chairing weekly incident review huddles, conducting investigations, driving safety and risk initiatives, and reporting to the CMO and governance committees.
  • Credentialing, accreditation, and compliance – supporting the CMO in credentialing processes, college accreditation requirements, and monitoring compliance across medical and nursing staff.
  • Workforce management and education – contributing to recruitment, induction, rostering, orientation, professional development, wellbeing support, and workforce planning in collaboration with key operational units.
  • Stakeholder engagement and representation – working closely with Victoria Police, sexual assault services, hospitals, and other justice and health partners, and representing the CMO or Head of Service at meetings and regional forums.
  • Strategic projects and service improvement – leading or supporting operational and strategic projects, developing policies, identifying system improvements, and participating in statewide redesign initiatives.

Throughout the role, you will receive direct mentorship and supervision from senior medical executives, making this an ideal position for RACMA trainees seeking broad, practical exposure to medical leadership within a complex justice–health environment.

Key Qualifications and Attributes

You will be a collaborative, motivated clinician with a genuine interest in medical leadership. You must have:

  • MBBS (or equivalent) with full general AHPRA registration.
  • Enrolment in the RACMA Fellowship Training Program (or eligibility and willingness to enrol).
  • Minimum three years of relevant clinical experience.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and leadership capability.
  • Experience in education, training, or clinical competency development.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and the capacity to work across disciplines.
  • A commitment to high-quality care, continuous improvement, and professional standards.
