Position Details

The Energy, Environment and Climate Change Group within the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) works across the Department, with portfolio agencies, external stakeholders and with Ministers to implement DELWP's state-wide objectives in energy, environment and climate change.  The Group provides high quality advice to government on directions, principles, strategies and actions to lead the Victorian Government's responses to climate change, environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, the transformation of Victoria's energy system and the management of natural and built assets on public land.  It has a strong track record of performance and leads the way on legislation nationally.

Reporting to the Secretary, key priorities for the successful candidate will be to drive integrated, systemic approaches to the Government's environmental initiatives and energy and climate change reforms. The role will oversee energy market reform, lead energy security and reliability and deliver projects and programs across the energy portfolio to implement the Victorian Renewable Energy Target.  The Deputy Secretary will lead whole of government action on emissions reductions and climate adaption in partnership with business and communities to drive collaboration with communities and portfolio partners to implement key strategies in biodiversity, native vegetation and public land management including coastal environments and the alpine sector.

This role requires a strategic and innovative approach to progress state-wide reform, drive effective service delivery and embed continuous improvement in organisational design, culture and performance. The Deputy Secretary will shape innovative and original policy, programs and regulatory frameworks at a critical juncture in Victoria's energy, biodiversity and climate change agenda.

The position will suit candidates with a strong background in energy and/or the environment.  The ability to build an effective, constructive and people centred culture with a cohesive and accountable leadership team will be critical to your success in the role.  Your leadership and direction will provide the space for your teams to grow and develop, and be accountable for the performance of their divisions.

You regard your political acumen and interpersonal skills as key strengths and enjoy the challenges and rewards which come from leading a high-profile portfolio and building trust and credibility with Ministerial offices and stakeholders across the sector.
