One of the major challenges for the department is to maintain Victoria's liveability with a population that is expected to almost double by 2050, while responding to climate change and protecting our natural environment, infrastructure and heritage for future generations.

The Director State Planning Services will be a key member of the executive leadership team and will play a critical role in building a high performing customer-focused culture. The appointee will play an important role in shaping and influencing future planning, policies and projects while developing strong working partnerships and relationships across all levels of state government, local government, industry and community. The Director will lead and drive the planning service function in collaboration with the planning portfolio and the wider department. The role extends to overall assessment and approval of metropolitan planning scheme amendments, regional amendments and windfarm permit assessments. You will also ensure the delivery of high quality statutory planning outcomes while advising the Deputy Secretary, Secretary and relevant Ministers on the progress of programs/projects while identifying and highlighting strategic risks or potential issues in a timely manner.

For this position you will need to possess tertiary qualifications in either urban planning or a related field and have a deep understanding of statutory planning and policy implementation in a land use planning system. Ideally you will possess relevant public-sector experience with an understanding of political decision making, governance, accountability and performance. Previous experience in building and managing high performing teams will be critical as will be your ability to influence and manage a range of stakeholders. You will have a strong focus on customer service excellence and naturally work in a highly collaborative manner. You will also be energetic, adept at critical and strategic thinking and not afraid to challenge the status quo.

The role represents a fantastic opportunity to shape and deliver the planning services function within an environment of significant change and growth across the entire state.
