The Senior Policy Officer is a key role within the Forest Regulation team of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), with overarching responsibilities to manage the regulatory framework for Victoria's state forests.

This includes providing interpretation of regulatory policy on behalf of DELWP's Secretary with respect to management of forest values and timber harvesting of state forests on public lands.

The role provides a conduit between the core internal departments within DELWP and external stakeholders such as VicForests and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions in developing policy solutions. Therefore, the successful candidate is a subject matter expert on the management of forests and is able to draw on past experiences to inform and advise all stakeholders on emerging issues, risks and trends as they relate to the regulatory framework and timber harvesting.

Underpinning these overarching responsibilities is the daily maintenance of the forest management systems and framework that supports decisions by regional forest fire planning groups.

The incumbent will be a seasoned Advisor / Policy Officer and will not only bring an understanding of forest management systems in Victoria (or of similar jurisdictions), but will have a demonstrated professional background in knowing the detailed stages to formulating policy advice, understanding the development of policy and applied government policy.

This role provides leadership to a team, you must have strong leadership skills; be able to coordinate, guide and develop staff, establish the team's priorities, provide ‘course corrections' when required and, competently triage incoming work through effective delegation.  Your work style naturally lends itself to contributing to an inclusive and team-oriented workplace culture that is collaborative, professional and engaged. You want to be a part of a high performing team that you have contributed to.

You will be a highly dynamic worker, flexible and an agile thinker as you tackle problems and from time to time respond to requests and provide advice within tight time frames. Your highly-developed communication, stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills will be utilised as you navigate complex issues, conversations, expectations and the general demands and priorities of the role.

Above all you will have volumes of emotional intelligence, because you will be required to be reflective as you identify the consequences of your policy advice and what the impacts of the subsequent decisions will be on the management of Victoria's state forests.

This is an ongoing position.
