Position Details

Forest Fire Management Victoria, within the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, is seeking interest from candidates keen to be considered for appointment as the Assistant Chief Fire Officer in the Hume region. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a substantial, dispersed, high-performing team to deliver integrated forest, fire and emergency management operations on public land across the Hume region.

As Assistant Chief Fire Officer, you will lead a team of up to 250 people during peak periods, working with local communities, and other parts of government to deliver a broad range of programs in the region's forests and parks – including emergency response, planned burning, compliance, roading, recreation and cultural heritage management.

Reporting to the Chief Fire Officer and one of six ACFOs across the state, you will lead Forest Fire Management Victoria in the region and will have a key role in implementing Safer Together, Victoria's risk-based approach to fire management to reduce the impacts of fire on people, property and the environment. 

You will be a people-focussed leader, with a strong risk radar and a passion for community service, land management and the environment.  You will have a collaborative style and a commitment to driving a high performing culture, with a focus on productivity, improved workplace safety and achieving better outcomes in delivering local forest, fire and emergency management operations.

Candidates wishing to be considered for this opportunity will need to meet broad senior executive service criteria and have specific attributes including:

  • proven experience in forest/park/land management operations and fire/emergency/crisis management
  • track record leading large teams in complex operating environments; and
  • executive level experience, preferably with an understanding of the processes and levers that apply to Government.
