County Court of Victoria – Judges' Associate Positions

  • Exciting opportunity to join the County Court as an Associate (Criminal and Common Law Jurisdictions)
  • Expressions of Interest
  • Fixed Term opportunities available from June 2019

The County Court of Victoria is the principal trial court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears and determines criminal, common law and commercial matters. Our 70 Judges hear more than 11,000 cases per year across the three divisions. The County Court is committed to continuous improvement in accordance with the International Framework for Court Excellence.

The Court is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for Judges' Associate positions within the Court.  Through the EOI process, the Court is looking to fill current vacancies and future vacancies.

Judges' Associates work closely with the judiciary and are exposed to a range of interesting work, both in and out of court.

As a Judge's Associate you will have an exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience in the Court environment and develop an understanding of court processes and procedures.  Judges' Associates liaise extensively with the legal profession and observe the work of advocates and the judiciary.  The role will enable you to gain a thorough working knowledge of legal principles and legislation in a dynamic and sensitive environment.

As a Judge's Associate you will be part of a dedicated team charged with the responsibility of supporting a Judge in chambers and in court.  You will undertake interesting and varied work, including legal research work.

Associates may be required to accompany their Judge to circuit courts which will involve residing outside of Melbourne at one of twelve major regional centres for approximately eight weeks each year.

Associate positions provide a unique opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of the inner workings of the Court and as such are highly sought after and competitive.

To be successful in the role you will possess the following:

  • well-developed interpersonal and communication skills,
  • the ability to exercise sound judgment,
  • good organisational and problem solving skills,
  • excellent computer literacy and administration experience,
  • a Victorian law degree and/or experience in Victorian legal practice or an associated field will be viewed favourably.

The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism as you will be working closely with Judges, court staff, legal practitioners and service providers.

Recent law graduates, legal practitioners and candidates interested in a future at the Bar, are encouraged to apply.

If you are looking for an opportunity to develop your career in a dynamic environment then this is for you.
