Position Details

About the role: 

Reporting to the Budget Manager, the Budget Analyst works as part of a team that provides budget development, management, analysis and reporting services to support a designated client group. The role involves working closely with a range of internal stakeholders to deliver timely, accurate and insight-driven financial support.

The position is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of account reconciliations, annual account working papers, financial reports, briefings, and other ad hoc reports and correspondence, including the review of PAEC briefs. It includes ongoing budget management for selected areas, managing transactions through corporate systems, and undertaking continuous monitoring, analysis, forecasting, and reporting. This also includes ensuring payments are accurately processed and actioned to the sector through departmental payment systems.

The role requires engagement with internal stakeholders to ensure a high level of client service delivery, as well as assisting in the investigation and implementation of ad hoc tasks and projects. It contributes to the development of advice on financial policy, risks, trends, and potential solutions, supporting informed decision-making. The position will focus on developing and maintaining highly productive working relationships with clients and key stakeholders. This includes understanding their business imperatives, priorities, and compliance requirements, and ensuring financial advice and support align with organisational guidelines.

About you:

  • Applies departmental and whole-of-government financial policies, frameworks and business plans within own area of responsibility.
  • Identifies and resolves financial and reporting issues within agreed frameworks, escalating risks and emerging issues as appropriate.
  • Prepares clear, accurate and timely financial reports, briefs and correspondence on complex financial matters for a range of stakeholders.
  • Applies specialist financial and analytical knowledge to support budget development, forecasting, financial monitoring and reporting activities for the portfolios of responsibility.
  • Drafts financial reports, reconciliations and recommendations by interpreting and analysing complex financial information.

Qualifications/Specialist Expertise:

  • A tertiary qualification in business, accounting, economics or equivalent. Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants or equivalent professional accounting body is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in government would be desirable. Demonstrated experience in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting within a public sector or large, complex organisational environment.
  • CPA or CA or other equivalent accounting qualification and membership will also be highly regarded.
