Position Details

Ongoing, Part Time role, 16.0 hours per fortnight

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Aboriginal Health team at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service and make a real difference. 

In this position you will perform the role of Hospital Koori Liaison Officer (KHLO) in the Health Service one day a week (currently rostered as a Friday).   As the KHLO on duty, you will ensure that the services received by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people are culturally appropriate to their needs and you will act as a resource person for clinical staff.

This rewarding role will enable you to contribute to the care and service provided to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders and their families.  You will assist patients and families to have a good understanding of the health service, their condition and treatment options as well as using your knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations to ensure continuation of appropriate care.


The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A qualification in Community services/development, Aboriginal Health or substantial experience in this area.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience working with Aboriginal groups and services.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining culturally safe and effective networks
  • A good understanding and knowledge of the local Aboriginal culture and community, and demonstrated acceptance with the local Aboriginal community.
  • A strong commitment to social justice with demonstrated ability to advocate on behalf of clients and empower people to self-advocate.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective communication with the local Aboriginal community, relevant health service staff and other mainstream services.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify health and wellbeing issues of Aboriginal people and their families and explore issues beyond or underlying the presenting problem using a client centered approach.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of computers and software including Outlook, Word, Excel and demonstrated ability to record appropriate data.
