About us
The Common Law Division of the County Court hears and determines matters relating to personal injury, workplace, transport accident and medical negligence claims, and claims by a beneficiary under a will as well as other common law disputes, both in Melbourne and in regional Victoria.
The Division also manages and determines quasi criminal matters in the Appeals and Post Sentence Applications (APSA) List. The Division is governed by the Head of the Common Law Division, the Judges in charge of lists, and the judicial registrars.
The administrative team that supports the Division is comprised of Registrars, Division Lawyers and self-represented litigant case managers, working with and supporting judicial officers in the state-wide management of cases. Led by a director, and working in collaboration with judicial support staff, they are responsible for all administrative activities that sustain the operations of the Division, delivering critical services to Court users and the judiciary.
The Common Law Division is an innovative, collaborative environment, where we are committed to our obligations to facilitate the just, efficient, timely and cost effective resolution of the real issues in dispute. We are looking for someone who is passionate about contributing to the future direction of the Court and can hit the ground running.
About the role
As a Division Lawyer you will significantly contribute to improving the overall efficiency of the Division by focusing on the active case management of personal injury matters in their pre trial stages.
This will involve:
- Proactively liaising with parties to ensure matters are ready to commence on the trial date
- Triaging and analysing interlocutory any interlocutory issues and disputes
- If appropriate, case conferencing with legal practitioners to narrow or resolve any issues in dispute
- Playing an active role in the development and implementation of practice and procedures within the Common Law Division
Working closely and collaboratively with the judges, in particular the Head of the Common Law Division, judicial registrars and the Common Law Registry.
About you
Applicants are required to be, or eligible to be, an Australian Legal Practitioner. Ideally, you will have post-admission experience in civil litigation with an interest in alternate dispute resolution. Knowledge and/or experience in common law, in particular personal injury claims will also be well regarded. Exceptional communication skills together with your ability to work flexibly as a part of a high performing team and within a dynamic environment will ensure your success in this role.
If you are looking for a role which balances flexibility and supportive collaboration with an opportunity to engage meaningfully with the judiciary and Court users, this is the role for you.
