Position Details

We are seeking to appoint an Associate to support Judge Cosgrave of the Commercial Division of the County Court.

The County Court of Victoria has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial court in Victoria. The Court hears over 11,000 criminal and civil cases each year.

Since 1 January 2007, the County Court has had an unlimited monetary jurisdiction in civil matters.  The County Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the Supreme Court in almost all commercial litigation.

Following the removal of the monetary limit on the Court's jurisdiction and the appointment of additional Judges with commercial expertise, the commercial work of the court has grown in both size and complexity, with over 1,300 commercial initiations in 2020-21.  The work of the Commercial Division now constitutes approximately 40% of the court's civil jurisdiction.

As the Associate you will provide operational, administrative and technical legal support to the Judge both in chambers and in court. The role involves case file management, a strong emphasis on communication at all levels, and legal research and writing.

Ideally you will have a legal background, the drive to succeed, ability to perform under pressure and the capacity to work well in a small team. Candidates who are looking to practise exclusively in commercial law will be highly regarded.

Relevant qualifications and an Australian driver's licence is essential.

Please attach a copy of your relevant Academic Transcripts together with your application.
