The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Manager, Professional Practice to play a critical role in the State-wide Systems and Projects Unit.


About the business unit

Sitting within the Corrections and Justice Services, Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult corrections system. It ensures prisoners are safely and securely contained and aims to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.

The Sentence Management Division (SMD), of which State-wide Systems and Projects is a unit, is responsible for identifying prisoners' needs and matching them to correctional resources with the objective of placing and managing prisoners appropriately. It is a process of balancing security, management and needs of the prisoners, the community need for protection and efficient and effective operation of the correctional system. The Sentence Management Division is responsible for guiding the journey of offenders across the period of their sentence.

The State-wide Systems and Projects team is responsible for the management, coordination and oversight of systems and projects integral to the effective management of the adult correctional system and plays a key role in building the strategic capability of Corrections Victoria by leading the development and delivery of projects and initiatives of strategic relevance to the adult correctional system.


About the role

The Manager, Professional Practice (Sentence Management) is responsible for providing highly developed assessment and classification advice, ongoing individual support, professional development, regular practice forums and educations sessions to embed consistency in practice in line with Sentence Management Manual and other legislative requirements.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Develop and implement a quality assurance approach to ensure classification and risk assessment processes consistent with the Commissioner Requirements and Sentence Management Manual are embedded across the Sentence Management Division.
  • Conduct quality audits of process and contribute to the ongoing review of the Sentence Management Manual, to ensure that it continues to align with best practice standards for prisoner classification and management and practice improvements are embedded.
  • Support professional development of all Sentence Management Division staff responsible for the classification and assessment of prisoners through the provision of authoritative advice and the development of eLearns, face to face training, development forums and other activities required to train new staff and provide ongoing upskilling of existing staff.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • An understanding of the application of risk assessment tools, interviewing techniques (especially motivational interviewing), and trauma informed practice in the management of prisoners/offenders.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff development and training to embed quality practices within a workplace.
  • An understanding of the Victorian prison system and government initiatives that include the Reducing Re-offending and Offender Management frameworks.
