Position Details
An exciting opportunity exists for a self-motivated and results-driven Senior Transport Officer to join a collaborative, high performing and flexible team on a fixed term basis until 31 December 2025.
About the Department
The role of the Department of Education is to support Victorians to build prosperous, socially engaged, happy and healthy lives. It does this by supporting lifelong learning and healthy development, strengthening families and helping to equip people with the skills and knowledge for a 21st century economy and society.
About the Division
Design and implement financial management principles, processes and systems to ensure that the Department and its managers in central office, regions, schools and statutory authorities have the necessary support to execute their financial management responsibilities.
About the Branch
The Student Transport and Allowances Branch is responsible for:
- Overall policy coordination of the School Bus Program
- Coordinate the department's responsibilities under the School Bus Program
- Manage and deliver the Conveyance Allowance Program
- Manage and deliver the Students with Disabilities Transport Program
- Develop and implement program reforms and improvements consistent with Government priorities and budget constraints.
About the role
The Senior Transport Officer leads the shaping and implementation of departmental policies. This involves leading strategic policy projects and reform through research, analysis and development of options and the preparation of reports.
The Senior Transport Officer assists the Manager, School Bus Program to implement administrative reform of the School Bus Program, including the administration of the Student Travel Assistance Portal (STAP).
The role will ensure that schools and students accessing STAP are provided with accurate information and administrative support to enable the efficient delivery of school bus networks within STAP.
Supported by a team of program officers within the department's Student Transport Unit, the Senior Transport Officer will collaborate widely with schools, families and where required, Department of Transport and Planning representatives who are responsible for the coordination and management of contracted bus services delivering the School Bus Program.

They have a high level of interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships. They hold themselves and the team accountable to public sector values and agreed-upon performance standards, work to gain support for ideas behind the scenes and bring value to stakeholders.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Desirable: Degree in Policy Development or a related field
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in developing policies, guidelines, and procedures related to program management or operational initiatives
- Familiarity with the education sector or similar public sector.
