About the Department
The department provides a wide range of learning and development support and services.
The department provides policy leadership, plans for the future of education in Victoria and leads key cross-sector collaboration. The department plays an important system steward role by providing support, guidance, oversight and assurance across early childhood and school education systems, as well as directly providing school education and 50 new early learning centres.
About the Division
The Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division (CTPD) works collaboratively across the department, with schools, and with stakeholders, to co-design and implement initiatives that support schools to deliver high-quality curriculum and teaching programs.
CTPD has primary responsibility for the provision of advice and implementation support to government schools to deliver the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Drawing on contemporary research and practice evidence, CPTD's work contributes to ongoing improvements in student outcomes by flexibly responding to student needs and aspirations, as well as those of school communities.
CTPD has 2 branches:
- Literacy, Languages, the Arts and Humanities
- Numeracy, STEM and Digital Learning.
About the Numeracy and STEM Education Unit
The Numeracy and STEM Education Unit (NSEU) co-designs and implements initiatives that support schools to deliver high-quality programs in numeracy, mathematics, science and the technologies. Key functions include:
- Develops policy and guidance for improving mathematics and numeracy outcomes.
- Designs and delivers Victorian Teaching and Learning Model: VTLM 2.0 (Arc) aligned professional learning to strengthen teacher confidence and capability in teaching in mathematics, science, and the technologies.
- Develops and publishes VTLM 2.0 aligned teaching and learning resources for classroom use in mathematics, numeracy, science and the technologies.
- Supports and coordinates the Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors.
About the Role
The Senior Policy Advisor – Mathematics Resources will support the NSEU to develop evidence-based advice and resources for teachers and school leadership aligned to the VTLM 2.0, as well as the development of resources for parents and carers that support numeracy at home.
Key responsibilities
- Work closely with the Strategic Advisor for Mathematics Improvement and the Manager, Numeracy and STEM Education Unit to develop high quality advice and resources that support teachers and school leaders to implement the Mathematics Positions Statement and the VTLM 2.0.
- Lead consultation with internal stakeholders to inform the development of numeracy at home supports for parents and carers.
- Design specifications for the procurement of evidence-based mathematics teaching and learning resources and resources that strengthen numeracy across the curriculum. Manage contracts with suppliers to ensure development of resources align with specification and are delivered on time and within budget.
- While the role does not have direct reports, the ability to lead small teams within NSEU on specific time limited projects will be required.
Attributes

- Strong project management skills including stakeholder management and experience with procurement processes
- Excellent conceptual, analytical and writing skills and excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to plan, organise, and prioritise competing requests
- Effective problem-solving capability to resolve or escalate emerging risks and issues
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional team.
