Position Details
About the Role
The Senior Developer (Databricks) contributes to the development of end-to-end Database and Business Intelligence solutions. The Departments data infrastructure is currently transitioning from an existing SQL Server data warehouse and associated pipelines to a modern Databricks and Azure environment. The successful candidate will contribute to migration design, development, and optimisation activities, while ensuring continuity for downstream reporting and analytics during the transition period.
The successful applicant will have experience working in a team of experienced developers. They will possess in-depth knowledge of the latest data warehousing and database tools, BI software and technologies, scripting languages and Databricks.
This is an ongoing full-time opportunity.
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Design and develop Databricks notebooks, jobs, and workflows using SQL and Python to support data ingestion and transformation.
- Migrate SQL Server data warehouse structures, SQL logic, and ETL processes to Databricks and Azure-native services.
- Translate existing SSIS packages and data pipelines into scalable Databricks-based solutions, including Python-based pipelines where appropriate.
- Support existing reporting and semantic layers, including SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, and Tableau.
- Ensure data quality, performance, and reliability throughout the migration lifecycle.
- Ensure all code written is well-designed, maintainable and testable.
- Support the existing team to uplift Databricks capability, promote best practices, and encourage consistent, maintainable development patterns.
- Contribute to technical documentation, testing and development standards for the new platform.
Essential experience includes:
- Databricks, SQL, Python and/or R.
- Advanced SQL skills in data warehousing and analytics contexts.
Highly desirable experience includes:
- Power BI and Tableau reporting platforms.
- Working knowledge of SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
- CI/CD (Continuous integration/continuous deployment) using scripting languages or version control tools such as Azure DevOps
Desirable Qualifications
Relevant tertiary qualification in Data Analysis, Information Technology, Computer Science or Software Development

The Performance and Evaluation Division (PED) collects, analyses and disseminates high-quality evidence to influence decision making across the Department, government agencies and service providers to improve outcomes for children, young people and adult learners. Within PED, the Data and Insights branch provides data solutions across data warehousing, ETL pipelines, analytics, modelling, reporting, design and data communication. The branch supports surveys, research, and data requests, transforming complex datasets into actionable insights. The Data and Insights branch works closely with clients to define requirements and resolve data challenges, enabling informed, data-driven decisions.
