Budget Analyst

Working within the Strategic Budget Analysis and Reporting unit, you will support the management of the $15 billion budget for the Department of Education and Training. Your main role will involve maintaining a working relationship with the Department of Treasury and Finance, through provision of financial information and reporting activities, i.e., the monthly variance analysis report and maintaining the Department’s forward estimates through preparing financial journals to update the State Resource Information Management System (SRIMS). In addition, you will provide assistance to program areas in the preparation of costing estimates for the Expenditure Review Sub-Committee (ERSC) process and be involved in the preparation of the annual State Budget Papers and Annual Financial Reports.

Position Details

To be successful in this role, financial experience gained within the government sector in Australia is essential. Ideally, you will bring strong technical, analytical and systems skills as applied in a management accountant/analyst role within the Victorian Government. You will have a strong background in budget and management reporting and have familiarity with the state budget cycle and associated legislative requirements.

Your ability to interpret data and draw sound conclusions will be vital, and you will be comfortable working flexibly, dealing with ambiguity and thinking on your feet to ensure that ad-hoc tasks are delivered accurately in a timeline driven environment. You will be rewarded with hands-on exposure to key financial processes such as the preparation of the State Budget Papers, ERSC submissions and build on your non-financial skills through writing Ministerial briefs and coordinating responses from internal stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to prepare financial journals and deal with multiple priorities and stakeholders at once is essential.
