Position Details

A rare opportunity has arisen to work as a Principal Lawyer and Manager for the Property and Construction unit in the Commercial and Legislation (CAL) branch of the Department of Education and Training's Legal Division. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the management of the Legal Division and CAL branch by leading and collaboratively managing the Property Law team in accordance with the Department's values and objectives. The Principal Lawyer and Manager will be responsible for specialist technical and strategic legal advice in the areas of law relevant to the property and construction work of the Property Law team, and for supervising the work of other lawyers. The Property Law unit provides property and construction legal services to the school network and DET corporate areas with a particular focus on the Victorian School Building Authority's (VSBA) School Building Program. The successful candidate will assist in advising the VSBA in relation to the following, as well as advising the government school network in relation to capital works, services and maintenance contracts, property and land issues and licences and hiring arrangements: o procurement, probity and policy; o land use arrangements including leases, licences, development agreements and community joint use agreements; o facilitating land arrangements for the purposes of assembling sites for construction and third party use arrangements; and o upgrades, refurbishments and the construction of existing and new schools. The role will provide an opportunity to work with school principals and senior Executive Officers within the Department. In addition, the role will be responsible for coordinating staff and other lawyers and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders.

The Department leads the delivery of education and development services to children, young people and adults both directly through government schools and indirectly through the regulation and funding of early childhood services, non-government schools and training programs.

The Legal Division is located within People and Executive Services and provides highly valued legal services across the Department's portfolios including early childhood, schools, higher education, and training and skills.

The role is located in the Commercial and Legislation (CAL) branch which provides legal advice on a wide spectrum of commercial and property law matters, with a view to managing risk for the Department and the Victorian Government. The team may be required to advise on, and provide strategic advice in relation to, commercial disputes including on building and construction matters.

The role will sit within the Property Law unit which provides property and construction legal services to the school network and DET corporate areas with a particular focus on the Victorian School Building Authority's (VSBA) School Building Program.
