Principal Lawyer & Manager - Children, Families & Education Law

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the management of the Legal Division's Workplace and Education Law (WEL) branch by leading and collaboratively managing the Children, Families and Education Law (CFEL) Unit in accordance with the Department’s values and objectives. The CFEL Unit of the Legal Division provides legal advice for all matters relating to duty of care, privacy, FOI, family disputes, intervention orders, mandatory reporting and other legal issues that arise in Victorian government schools. The Unit also assists in legal policy issues related to schools and manages Department involvement in Coronial and other inquiries. The Principal Lawyer and Manager role will be responsible for specialist legal advice in the areas of expertise relevant to their team and for settling and supervising the work of other lawyers.

Position Details

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly self-motivated team player to join the Legal Division, within the People and Executive Services Group, Department of Education and Training.

The Legal Division consists of two branches:

• Commercial and Legislation branch (CAL); and

• Workplace and Education Law branch (WEL).

The Executive Director and Branch Directors are the Legal Division Executive. The Legal Division leadership team comprises the Executive Director, Branch Directors, and Principal Lawyers and Managers from across the Division.

Work undertaken by lawyers in this Division includes technical and complex legal analysis, legal advice, legal policy, project management and effective stakeholder engagement.

As a Manager you will be accountable for your own work program but also contribute to the broader strategic plans to achieve Divisional priorities, and devise and implement improved systems and processes where possible. You will also manage team dynamics, role model desired behaviours and manage staff workloads to ensure optimal output.
