Position Details

An exciting opportunity exists for a Lawyer to join the Legal Division, within the People and Executive Services Group, Department of Education and Training.

The Legal Division consists of two branches:

• Commercial and Legislation branch (CAL); and

• Workplace and Education Law Branch (WEL).

The Legal Division leadership team comprises the Executive Director, Branch Directors and Principal Lawyers and Managers from across the Division. Work undertaken by lawyers in this Division includes technical and complex legal analysis, legal advice, legal policy, project management and effective stakeholder engagement.

As a lawyer, you will demonstrate leadership qualities and take pride in and be accountable for your own work and development, reporting to Senior Lawyers and Principal Lawyers/Managers. The role requires collaboration with external lawyers and counsel.

The successful candidate will assist in collecting data, reporting, analysing and evaluating complex claims to achieve the objectives of the Legal Division, inform departmental policy and resource management.

Working closely with Principal Lawyers and Managers and Senior Lawyers in the Legal Division, the role will assist in the provision of legal advice in relation to the legislation, policies and operations of the Department and to support the Legal Division's work, including: legal research; knowledge management; drafting legal documents, correspondence and briefings; reviewing Department policies and guidelines; preparing reports and resources; assisting with case preparation; attending to court filing; collating data and reporting as required; and liaising with clients (e.g. Principals of Victorian Government schools and corporate DET staff), and others (e.g. witnesses, external law firms representing the Department, courts and tribunals) as appropriate.

The role requires a lawyer with a sensitive and compassionate approach given the nature of the claims and potential legal risks for the Department. The role also requires a lawyer with good judgment who knows when to escalate matters and can pursue and resolve ambiguities where possible.
