Principal Lawyer & Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Principal Lawyer and Manager for a fixed term 12 month period working broadly across the Legal Division's Workplace and Education Law (WEL) Branch and within the leadership team of the Legal Division. The WEL Branch of the Legal Division provides legal advice and litigation management for all matters relating to negligence and duty of care, employment, discrimination, human rights, privacy, FOI, family disputes, intervention orders, mandatory reporting and other legal issues that arise in Victorian government schools. The Branch also assists in legal policy issues and administrative law issues related to early childhood, schools and higher education.

Principal Lawyer & Manager

The Legal Division is seeking a self-motivated team player to join the Legal Division, within the People and Executive Services Group, Department of Education and Training.

The Legal Division consists of two branches:

• Commercial and Legislation branch (CAL); and

• Workplace and Education Law branch (WEL).

The Executive Director and Branch Directors are the Legal Division Executive. The Legal Division leadership team comprises the Executive Director, Branch Directors, and Principal Lawyers and Managers from across the Division.

Work undertaken by lawyers in this Division includes technical and complex legal analysis, legal advice, legal policy, project management and effective stakeholder engagement.

As a Principal Lawyer and Manager you will be accountable for your own work program but also contribute to the broader strategic plans to achieve Divisional priorities, and devise and implement improved systems and processes where possible. You will also manage team dynamics, role model desired behaviours and manage staff workloads to ensure optimal output.

The position will require a practising certificate.
