YOUR ROLE

A typical week in this role involves:

  • working collaboratively with other Construction and Property Law Unit (CPLU) team members in a fast paced work environment on varied and complex matters;
  • liaising and advising with VSBA project teams across a high volume of school projects on procurement and consultancy arrangements and construction contracts from tender to contract execution;
  • advising on land arrangements for the purposes of assembling sites for construction;
  • providing construction advice relating to contract administration claims and issues;
  • assisting with updating the team's construction and consultancy precedents and participating in training sessions for VSBA project officers;
  • advising the school network in relation to capital works contracts; and
  • advising on Government cabinet submissions and Ministerial correspondence.

OUR TEAM

The Legal Division is led by the Executive Director, Legal Division and comprises the following branches:

  • Commercial and Legislation (CAL) branch; and
  • Workplace and Education Law branch.

CPLU sits within the CAL branch and at a high level performs the following functions:

  • provides high quality strategic, accurate, timely and practical, solution focused legal advice and services on matters that are specific to education law and the Department;
  • is a valued strategic business partner with a deep understanding of the education sector and Department stakeholders enabling it to contribute to solutions and proactively empower and build client capacity on legal issues; and
  • provides a value for money legal service partnering with external law firms (as needed).

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Bachelor's degree Law and admitted to practice law in Victoria (or ability to be admitted if role is offered)
  • a minimum of 3-4 years post-admission experience
  • familiarity of AS2124 and AS4300 construction contracts and specialist construction legal expertise with the ability to provide high quality, solutions-focused and timely legal advice
  • hands-on, down to earth approach, with the ability to liaise with a variety of stakeholders within the Department
  • top tier or mid-tier private practice experience or in-house / government experience desired
