The Director, Public Communications is responsible for overseeing the delivery of public facing education messages and for leadership of the public and media discussion in the State of Victoria.

The Director provides high level advice to relevant Ministerial Offices and other key decision makers on public communications. This includes issue management, media relations, major events, stakeholder and public engagement and Ministerial briefings. This role will focus on forging stronger connections between the Victorian Government and its education audiences.

Position Details

The Public Communications Branch is responsible for advocacy, public affairs, issue management and engaging with Victorians on education issues and services. This is achieved via media relations, stakeholder management, public affairs communications and event management.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Communications, an outstanding career opportunity exists for a suitably experienced Director, Public Communications. This position is responsible for providing high level public affairs advice to Ministerial Offices, the Secretary and Executive Board.  This includes issues and crisis management, media relations, major events, stakeholder and public engagement and Ministerial briefings. The role will focus on forging stronger connections between the department and its education audiences.

The Director, Public Communications will also take responsibility for aligning communications functions across various parts of DET including the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), and the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA).

As a member of the management team, this role is directly responsible for budget, resource and contract management as well as the development of a large team of staff through mentoring, professional development and workload management.

Key to your application will be your proven ability to provide: 

  • High level government public affairs advice for Ministers, department executives and policy and program areas
  • Public Affairs advocacy and engagement across all DET portfolios in early childhood, school education and training and skills and higher education
  • Management of relationships with key stakeholders
  • Management of the Media, Major Events, Stakeholder/Public Engagement and Speechwriting and Event Briefings services.
