Navigator Coordinator

The Navigator Coordinator plays a key role in the implementation of the Navigator program. The Navigator program funds community service organisations to provide intensive case management and assertive outreach to young people aged 12-17 years who are significantly disengaged from school to support them to return to education. The Navigator model is defined by its partnership approach between the community sector, Department of Education and Training (DET), and education providers to enable a service that supports a place-based response to disengagement and supports a young person to re-engage in education.

Position Details

Working closely with their local Navigator Provider, Navigator Coordinators play a key role in managing the relationship between Navigator Providers, DET and other key services. Navigator Coordinators, situated in the multi-disciplinary Area team structure, facilitate referrals to the program in consultation and collaboration with DET Area teams and schools within the Area, and engage in relevant data reporting processes that monitor re-engagement processes and outcomes for young people. Navigator Coordinators support the development and oversight of the strategic Governance of the program, to identify broader opportunities to support the Navigator cohort and to ensure alignment with DET Area priorities. Navigator Coordinators take on aspects of contract management, working with the Navigator Providers to build their capacity to engage with the school system and achieve the outcomes required.

The capacity to link young people into broader community supports and to engage with relevant networks in the Area is an important part of the role. Therefore, the role includes a strong focus on local information gathering in relation to individual young people and services that may be involved in their re-engagement planning.

Experience in working across the education and community sectors in relation to disengagement is essential for this role, as is the ability to work with schools both at an individual staffing level, and the broader school system level.

The role requires an understanding of both community and education sectors, and how their systems operate to support young people and their families who face multiple, complex issues that may impact on their ability to engage with education.
