An exciting opportunity exists in the newly established LOOKOUT Education Support Centre in the South Western Victoria Region to contribute to helping students in out of home care stay in education and achieve their best. The LOOKOUT Centre is a virtual setting that performs a critical advocacy and support by securing the rights and best outcomes for children and young people in Out of Home Care within our existing educational system. On any one day there are approximately 6,400 school-aged children and young people living in out of home care. Within this group of students, an unacceptably high number are not enrolled in school, attending regularly, or achieving their best. Education is the critical intervention to advance the wellbeing and future choices of our most vulnerable children.

Position Details

The LOOKOUT Learning Advisor works as part of the regional team to support schools to ensure that all students in out-of-home care are enrolled in school. We are aspirational for our children and ensure children and young people are effectively supported with Individual Education Plans, Educational Needs Assessments (ENA), Student Support Groups (SSG) and additional resources to which they are entitled. The LOOKOUT Learning Advisor as part of the team delivers professional development to schools, CPP, CSOs and Universities with a focus on the education and wellbeing of students in out-of-home care. The LOOKOUT Learning Advisor also trains and supports Designated Teachers in every school as advocates for children in care. The position is based in Keilor with a strong focus on the Brimbank/Melton area.

The role of the LOOKOUT Learning Advisor provides an exciting opportunity to be part of the South Western Victoria LOOKOUT team.

As  the LOOKOUT Learning Advisor you will work closley with other LOOKOUT Team members to achieve the teams goals.

The location of the position is  based at the Department of Education and Training Regional Office in Keilor.  LOOKOUT Centre staff are based in different regional offices of the Department in South Western Victoria Region. The role will be based in Keilor and have a focus in the Brimbank/Melton area, but the LOOKOUT team has oversight over the entire South Western Victoria region.

As a LOOKOUT Learning Advisor, you will:

  • work with schools to ensure that all students are effectively supported with Individual Education Plans, Educational Needs Assessments, Student Support Groups and additional resources to which they are entitled
  • deliver professional development to schools, Child Protection Practitioners and  Community Sector Organisations with a focus on the education and wellbeing of students in out of home care
  • ensure consistency of support and sharing of information during school transfers
  • contribute to the development of policy and practice to improve educational outcomes of students in out of home care across Victoria and collaborate across the South Western Victoria Region
  • Contribute as part of the LOOKOUT team 

Candidates must address the Key Selection Criteria. 

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills, an understanding of the out of home care system and supports in Victoria, strong negotiation and communication skills. Teacher qualifications will be looked on favourably, as will experience working with children and families experiencing vulnerability.
