Secondary School Nurse

The Secondary School Nursing Program is managed and led by DET and places nurses within the wellbeing teams of selected secondary schools to help reduce negative health outcomes and risk taking behaviours amongst young people. The Secondary School Nurse is a member of the School Nursing team; Health, Wellbeing and Specialist Services team; area and regional teams. The Secondary School Nurse role supports the school in addressing contemporary health and social issues facing young people with a focus on health promotion and primary prevention including health education, classroom education sessions and small group education and limited primary health care including student assessment, referral and support. The Secondary School Nurse works collaboratively with students, teachers, wellbeing staff, school leadership and school communities to build capacity and improve - health outcomes.

Position Details

An exciting opportunity exists for a Division One Registered Nurse, to join the Central highlands School Nurse Program  based from the Ballarat Office, to deliver: individual health counselling, health promotion and planning, school community development activities, adolescent group work and referral service(s) to assist young people in making life style choice.

To succeed in this role you will need to demonstrate highly effective teamwork and communication skills to deliver evidenced based nursing services to the school community, while being a respectful team member of the School Nurse Program, to promote a broad social view of health.

The key components include:

  • Health promotion and community development within the school and broader community with a focus on the broad health and social issues facing young people.
  • Facilitation of links between the studnet,school, and community based agencies
  • Assesement, referal and support for young people particulary during educational, health anddevelopmental transitions.
  • assist with the development and delivery of appropriate health realted curriculum; and
  • a culturally sensitive service 

The incumbent is required to practice in accordance with Department of Education and Training policy and procedure as well as the various Professional Codes, Guidelines and Registration Standards set by Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority.
