Aboriginal Graduate Program
Our areas of focus are child protection, housing, disability, the prevention of family violence, multicultural affairs, LGBTQI+ equality, veterans, women and youth. The work we do benefits thousands of Victorians, particularly those who are disadvantaged and vulnerable.
We work in a variety of community-based settings, including people's homes, residential facilities and secure settings across metropolitan, rural and regional Victoria.

THE ROLE
Aboriginal Graduate Program 2024 at DFFH
The Aboriginal Graduate Program 2024 at the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH or department) provides a rewarding career for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary graduates.
We have multiples vacancies within the program, and you only need to apply once - no need to complete multiple applications. You can specify within your cover letter your areas of interest or preference from the opportunities detailed below.
We are seeking graduates from a range of degree types; we want deadly ideas, fresh thinking, and perspectives from a variety of disciplines.

Opportunities available
This year, we are delighted to be able to offer three opportunities within the program. The business areas that can offer a position are:
- Homes Victoria - People, Strategy & Governance
- Homes Victoria - Business Systems
- Aboriginal Self-Determination & Outcomes - Aboriginal Policy Reform
As a graduate in the Aboriginal Graduate Program 2024 with the department, you will get hands-on experience along with formal development opportunities tailored to build your skills. This will give you a professional advantage in the increasingly competitive workforce, wherever your career may take you.
Typically, graduates undertake a structured program at the department which comprises of:
- work rotations designed to expose you to business areas across the department
- opportunities to undertake a diverse range of work
- on the job and formal training to help you establish your professional grounding
- opportunities to build professional networks

Who we are looking for

We are looking for great communicators who are motivated to contribute their skills and knowledge to the work the department does. For all roles, you will need to have:
- experience of working within teams
- attention to detail and good record keeping
- sound conceptual and analytical skills
- written and verbal communication skills.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Aboriginal Graduate Program 2024, you must:
- Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
- Have completed, or be in your final year, of your undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree in any of the below fields of education:
- Social and youth work, health, psychology, community services and related disciplines
- Public policy, arts or Indigenous studies
- Business, economics, accounting, communications or law
COVID-19 Vaccination
The department strongly recommends (but does not mandate) that employees maintain their COVID-19 vaccination status in accordance with current ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) advice, given their individual circumstances. As of June 2023, DFFH does not require evidence of COVID-19 vaccination status.
A SPECIAL MEASURE PROVISION APPLIES TO THIS ROLE
