Position Summary: 

The Head of Social Media leads the development and integration of rich media content across priority social media channels and provides strategic and tactical advice on improving customer experience and operationalising the department's communication strategy.


  • Provide authoritative and expert advice to executives, business units and other key internal and clients on the development, delivery and evaluation of change communication and staff engagement strategies and related change and reputation risk management.
  • Provide senior leadership and oversight of social media channel planning and the moderation of communities associated with the department's social channels.
  • Administers the department's social media accounts and liaises with satellite brands to ensure consistent presence and approach.
  • Maintain up-to-date expert knowledge of emerging media and trends and its application to best practice social media channel management, including legal changes that affect social media.
  • Lead continuous service improvement, regularly report and monitor performance and channel reviews.
  • Lead and manage a team to ensure delivery of innovative, professional, community moderation by:
  1. supporting staff to achieve their potential and contribution to organisational goals and outcomes
  2. modelling behaviours integral to good people management and departmental values
  3. where relevant, managing and monitoring specific improvement objectives in annual improvement plans
  4. pro-actively building and maintaining positive relationships with peers and stakeholders across the organisation
  5. instilling and driving a performance culture within the team.
  • As a member of this branch:
  1. Contribute to the annual work plan and implementation of assigned activities
  2. Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  3. Provide strategic, operational and authoritative advice to the Communications and Engagement Executive
  • Lead and manage a team by:
  1. Supporting individuals to achieve their potential while maximising their contribution to support achievement of the department's goals and objectives
  2. Role modelling behaviours integral to good people management and public service values
  3. Providing employees with relevant information and access to safe systems of work
  4. Contribute to Communications and Engagement Branch strategy and services activity, monitor performance and lead best practice planning and execution that aligns resources to strategic priorities.
  5. Forge strong connections with stakeholders (internal and external) and work cross-functionally with other members of the Communications and Engagement Branch to facilitate consistent and high standard strategic digital content and channel management.
  6. Identify and actively manage emerging issues and areas of risk for government, department and the community.
  7. Keep accurate and complete records of your work activities in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's records, information security and privacy policies and requirements.
  8. Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for that of others in the workplace by working in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
  9. Demonstrate how the actions and outcomes of this role and work unit impact clients and the department's ability to deliver, or facilitate the delivery of, effective support and services.
