About the role: 

The Manager, Mental Health and AOD Workforce Growth is responsible for design and execution of workforce growth related work from: the strategic planning process through to delivery, forging and maintaining key stakeholder relationships, and the coordination of expert advice to inform the design of a contemporary and reform-aligned workforce.

How you'll make a difference:

The Manager, Mental Health and AOD Workforce Growth manages a team that leads implementation of a program of growth initiatives dedicated to workforce innovation, expansion, and promotion. 

This includes delivery of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System which set a comprehensive and ambitious reform agenda that the Victorian Government has committed to implementing in full. Delivered workforce initiatives are also aligned with both Victoria's Mental Health and Wellbeing Workforce Strategy 2021-24 and Victorian Health Workforce Strategy. This includes work that supports growing early career opportunities for clinical (e.g. mental health nurses, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and other allied health discipline) and non-clinical (e.g. wellbeing support workers) roles in area mental health and wellbeing services and mental health community support services.

The successful applicant will demonstrate sound leadership and people management skills, as well as an ability to influence others to maximise efficiency and effectiveness of the Victorian mental health workforces and improve outcomes for Victorians.

Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Policy skills: Formulates and communicates public policy options and recommendations; keeps up-to-date with a broad range of contemporary issues; scans for links and potential implications of proposed policy options; liaises with stakeholders.
  • Strategic planning skills: Thinks at the big picture level, entertains wide-ranging possibilities in developing a vision for the future, works across a number of time frames, translates strategic direction into day-to-day activities.
  • A tertiary qualification in fields related to education and training and/or public health; and a sound understanding of the Victorian mental health system would be desirable.
  • The following specialist expertise would be beneficial: 
    • Experience in the mental health workforce sector. 
    • Workforce planning experience. 
    • An understanding of challenges faced by people with mental illness, mental health challenges or psychological distress, including as a family member, carer or supporter.
