About the role:
The Senior Data Scientist role focuses on leveraging data analytics to enhance the insights achieved from program implementation and delivery, and Ambulance Victoria data to inform improvements across Victoria's public health services and hospitals.
The position involves applying advanced analytical techniques to evaluate performance trends and identify true drivers of change. The Senior Data Scientist will use statistical methods to distinguish genuine improvements from normal variations, providing an objective assessment of system performance. This work is essential for generating actionable insights that support evidence-based decision-making.

How you'll make a difference:
The Senior Data Scientist will incorporate principles of improvement science to develop and test hypotheses about factors influencing emergency care efficiency. This involves creating analytical frameworks to assess the impact of various interventions and system changes.
The role also encompasses collaborating with diverse stakeholders to implement data-informed recommendations for enhancing emergency care delivery. The Senior Data Scientist will work closely with health services and departmental areas, effectively communicating insights to drive initiatives.
As a new function within the branch, this position offers a unique opportunity for a trailblazer in healthcare analytics. It is ideal for someone who thrives on innovation, enjoys working with large, complex datasets, and is passionate about developing creative solutions to challenging problems. The role provides the chance to shape the application of advanced analytics in Victoria's emergency healthcare system, making a tangible impact on service delivery and patient outcomes.
Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate:
- Conceptual and analytical ability skills: Expertise in applying complex statistical methods to healthcare data, including but not limited to hypothesis testing, time series analysis, and multivariate techniques. Demonstrates strong skills in trend analysis, and the ability to synthesise insights from diverse data sources. Proficient in developing and validating analytical models to support evidence-based decision-making and performance improvement in healthcare contexts.
- A tertiary qualification in fields related to statistics, econometrics, health analytics, public policy and/or health administration would be desirable.
- Extensive experience with tools such as SQL, R or Python, as well as data visualisation software (particularly PowerBI), is highly desirable.
