About the role: 

Reporting to the Managing Principal Solicitor and Executive lead within the Commercial Legal Advisory Team in the Legal Services and Integrity Branch, the Solicitor role will provide timely legal advice and prepare high quality contracts and other legal documents.

Your advice must be clear, accurate and proactive in managing risks. You will be required to draft and review a variety of contracts and other legal documents including bespoke procurement agreements, funding agreements, service agreements, IP agreements, IT agreements, licence agreements, grant agreements, loan agreements, research agreements, agreement variations, deeds of novation and other terms and conditions (including bespoke contracts). You will be required to provide legal advice to internal stakeholders within the department on a broad variety of commercial and corporate issues that arise in the health space. You will also be required to manage pre-litigation disputes (such as IT disputes) and oversee employment matters.

This role will also support the preparation of Ministerial correspondence, Cabinet submissions and other written reports and briefings to clients.

How you'll make a difference:

  • Provide well-reasoned legal advice, contracts, and other legal documents, briefings, and correspondence
  • Collaborate with departmental colleagues to deliver client-focused legal services
  • Prepare briefs and instruct counsel and contracted solicitors on the State Government Legal Panel
  • Liaise with external stakeholders including barristers, court/tribunal staff, other government departments and agencies and professional bodies in relation to a wide range of legal and policy issues
  • Share information with other areas of the department to support continuous improvement, system learning and effective monitoring and coordination of departmental priorities and obligations

Our next Solicitor:

To be successful in this role, you must hold (or be eligible to hold) a current practicing certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Vic).

In addition to this, you will possess:

  • Min. 2 years post admission experience
  • Relevant experience in commercial and/or corporate law
  • Relevant experience in govenrment law, for example drafting commercial contracts, advising on administrative law
  • Exceptional communication skills - both verbal and written, along with ability to communicate with influence
  • Proven legal drafting skills
  • Client-focused mindset 
  • Ability to self-manage and work in teams
