The Department of Health plays a critical role in the Victorian health system and is responsible for shaping it to meet the health needs of Victorians into the future. We also lead the Victorian Government's response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Working with our partners, we oversee Victoria's health system including mental health, ageing and aged care and preventive health. Position Details


The Executive Director, Medical Research drives the department's health and medical research agenda, providing leadership and advice to the department, sector, and government, including the Minister for Medical Research, on health and medical research policy and strategy.

Drawing on their sector expertise and influence, the Executive Director, Medical Research helps address health challenges by: supporting the growth of Victoria's health and medical research sector; aiding development of treatments to improve the health of all Victorians; and improving the competitiveness of Victoria's clinical trial capabilities.
The Executive Director will enhance and strengthen strategic partnerships with the Victorian health and medical research sector to: deliver key supports, including attracting, training and retaining health and medical researchers; support infrastructure development including new technologies, equipment and facilities; and enable the sector to develop and trial solutions to pressing health problems.

Are you

  • Recognised for your experience and expertise in the health and medical research and/or government sector(s)?
  • An experienced and outstanding leader of people at a senior level with demonstrable experience in change management?
  • Experienced in leading teams to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders across the department, government and the health and medical research sector?
  • Able to engage with clarity, passion and insight, to drive alignment and support for government priorities locally, nationally and internationally through influence and negotiation?


Mandatory Vaccination Policy

The department is committed to providing and maintaining a working environment which is safe and without risk to the health of its workers and clients. As it is an essential element of any role within the department that employees be able to attend work onsite and to do so safely, employees are required to be up-to-date with their vaccinations against COVID-19 as a condition of their employment. This requirement applies unless they have a medical condition which means they cannot be vaccinated against COVID -19. Therefore, the department will ask any prospective employee, who has been identified as the preferred candidate for a role within the department, to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination status prior to any offer of employment being made. If a prospective employee has a relevant medical condition which means they cannot be vaccinated against COVID-19, they should contact the department to discuss their individual circumstances.
