Position Details

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role reports to the Executive Director, Infrastructure Program Oversight Unit in the Legal, Privacy and Integrity branch. The position is responsible for the provision of legal advice to a variety of audiences including by phone, email, briefings, presentations and meetings as well as the development of policy and implementation of projects.

The role is available in the Legal, Privacy and Integrity branch and will be embedded within the Health Infrastructure Division (HID). HID is a division of the Department of Health and is responsible for the planning and delivery of the health infrastructure program, including new hospitals and ambulance stations, aged care and mental health facilities, redeveloping existing hospital facilities, as well as replacing and upgrading engineering infrastructure and medical equipment.

As a Senior Legal Specialist embedded within HID you will be required to provide authoritative, clear, timely, practical and commercial specialist legal advice on broad range of matters relevant to HID's responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in front-end construction, infrastructure or property law is essential. Experience in procurement and probity, planning, conveyancing, leasing, licensing, public liability, statutory interpretation and public law (including compliance with the Charter of Human Rights) will also be highly regarded.

The role is critical to ensuring HID can deliver the health infrastructure program consistent with achieving value for money and complying with all relevant public sector values, policies and probity requirements. The role requires a sound understanding of both the public sector operating environment and the commercial drivers and perspectives of private sector partners.

You will be required to:

  • work independently and lead projects;
  • co-ordinate, mentor and support other solicitors embedded within HID;
  • prepare written advices, briefings and reports to clients (including executive personnel);
  • engage and oversee external legal firms;
  • with clients, engage with private sector partners and their legal representatives;
  • develop and implement continuous improvement to the legal function across HID; and
  • support clients and maintain positive relationships by actively working with stakeholders.
