About us

The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory office accountable to the Victorian Parliament which has been established to protect the rights and enhance the position of people with disabilities in Victoria.

One of the principal functions of the Public Advocate, upon referral from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), is to conduct investigations in respect of applications before VCAT for guardianship or administration.

About the role

The role of Investigator, Advocate Guardian Program is part of a small team of investigators who act under delegation from the Public Advocate. In this role, you will:

  • Undertake complex investigations and provide sound advice and reports concerning disputed financial, medical and lifestyle matters involving people with disabilities
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and liaise with public sector agencies in the course of investigations
  • Appear before, prepare and present written and oral reports to VCAT and other courts and tribunals as required.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Demonstrated high level cognitive and investigation skills including conducting interviews, developing investigation plans, obtaining and analysing evidence and preparing formal investigation reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Victorian human services sector, particularly disability, mental illness and aged care service systems
  • A good understanding of the issues relating to disability, including mental illness and age related disability. An understanding of adult guardianship principles and practice is desirable but not essential.

A relevant tertiary qualification is desirable.
