The Division is responsible for civil law policy, native title, and policy regarding courts, tribunals and the judiciary in Victoria. The Division is also responsible for Civil Justice services through the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria, and the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The Division provides support to the Attorney-General as First Law Officer, and manages relationships with stakeholders and a number of independent statutory agencies within the Attorney-General's portfolio.

About the role

You will be employed in the Civil Justice Division as a Senior Legal Policy Officer assigned to Civil Justice Policy. Civil Justice Policy is responsible for policy development and advice in relation to matters of civil law, as well as in relation to native title claims under the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993 and applications under the Victorian Traditional Owners Settlement Act 2010. Civil Justice Policy undertakes those aspects of the Attorney-General's legislative program relevant to civil law and native title, as well as a range of non-legislative law reform and advisory activities, including in relation to human rights issues and the management of the Government Legal Services Panel contract.

You will be employed to work on matters of civil law. The principal work areas of the unit are private civil law, human rights, regulatory issues, social policy and civil dispute policy. As a Senior Legal Policy Officer, you will be responsible for a range of complex or sensitive issues requiring a high degree of skill.

After-hours work may be required, especially during Parliamentary sittings and at other times of peak demand.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:
