Position Details

About us

The Workplace Safety Reform unit was newly established in 2019 and supports the Minister for Workplace Safety in the delivery of an ambitious policy agenda and key strategic reforms. This includes government's public and election commitments such as the implementation of a new Workplace Manslaughter offence, improvements to Victoria's workers' compensation system and a range of policy, legislative, and regulatory changes to improve safety in the workplace. The Unit works closely with WorkSafe Victoria, and other regulatory bodies to deliver these commitments.

About the role

The Policy Officer will work on a diverse range of matters, which includes assisting with developing and implementing legislative, policy and administrative reforms, providing advice to department senior executives and Ministers on complex policy matters.

In this role you will:

  • contribute to research and policy work to provide advice and support to the Minister and the Departmental Executive on a range of policy proposals, programs and initiatives within the reform program
  • prepare well-informed accurate and timely briefings, advice, reports, correspondence and documentation for the Minister, Executive Council and Departmental Executive.

About you

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • an understanding of workplace safety policy issues
  • knowledge of and experience in the development of policy and a sound understanding of legislative processes
  • sound knowledge of how legislation is developed and of Cabinet and Parliamentary processes.
