About us

The Justice Policy and Data Reform (JPDR) group supports the Attorney-General in her role as Victoria's First Law Officer and her criminal and civil law policy responsibilities.  We prioritise our relationships with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people-centred. 

Within the group the Justice System Reform branch is responsible for developing and driving coordinated strategic reform projects across the justice system to improve its performance and outcomes. This branch also manages the government and Department of Justice and Community Safety's (the department) strategic reviews and projects and supports the Attorney-General agencies including the Honorary Justice office.

About the role

The Policy Officer will be responsible for assisting with developing reform policy and/or legislation proposals and providing policy and legal advice in relation to Victoria's criminal justice system. In addition this role may have a specific focus on key social policy reforms that intersect with the justice portfolio.  Your main responsibilities will include:

  • with guidance and support, assist in the development and management of Victoria's reform policy and/or legislation
  • liaising with stakeholders with regard to the Attorney-General's work program and other issues affecting the Attorney-General's portfolio
  • monitoring developments and trends within Australia and overseas to ensure that the business unit is kept aware of best practice in relevant areas.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will be required to demonstrate:

  • knowledge and experience in a social policy or associated field and knowledge of Victorian criminal law
  • the ability to establish strong relationships with stakeholders
  • knowledge of cabinet processes and government decision-making processes.

A relevant qualification from a recognised tertiary institution is desired.
