About us

The Inspector-General for Emergency Management (IGEM) is an independent statutory role established under the Emergency Management Act 2013. IGEM provides assurance to government and the community in respect of emergency management arrangements in Victoria. The Inspector-General is supported in the performance of his/her emergency management assurance functions by a dedicated team of people provided through the Department of Justice and Community Safety.

IGEM provides assurance that emergency management arrangements are in place, are effective and foster the continuous improvement of emergency management in Victoria. We do this by monitoring the capacity, capability, and performance of the emergency management sector and undertaking system-wide reviews. We seek to add value through a risk-based, system-wide and proportionate approach to assurance. We engage with emergency management partners and the community, and apply a range of evidence-based methodologies to give government and the community confidence that lessons identified across all elements of emergency management are turned into sustainable improvements.

The IGEM office is made up of a small team of people making a big difference in the sector through their passion for building safer and more resilient communities. This brings with it the advantages of being an agile, supportive and collaborative workplace.
