About us

Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) is the Victorian Government's primary consumer protection agency and a business unit of the Department of Justice & Regulation.

The Policy & Legislation Branch forms part of the Policy and Corporate Services Division of Consumer Affairs Victoria.

The Policy & Legislation Branch provides policy services and advice, including review and development of legislation and subordinate legislation, to the Deputy Secretary, Regulation and the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation. The legislative program is an important structural element, defining and driving the activities of the Branch. The Branch also identifies and analyses underlying systemic and emerging consumer issues and provides advice on appropriate policy responses.

About the role

The role of a Policy Adviser role is to provide sound, evidence-based policy advice informed by strategic thinking and supported by targeted stakeholder engagement and sound project management. In this role, you will:

  • Participate in major projects to deliver policy reviews, legislative proposals and evaluate existing policies to address consumer issues and government priorities
  • Review legislation, develop and evaluate legislative and other regulatory options and advise on the implications of specific proposals
  • Contribute to the development of strategies to implement legislation and other policy initiatives.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • A good understanding of consumer protection issues, competition policy and regulatory reform, and the Government's policy framework
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders to implement projects to achieve business objectives
  • Good policy skills, with the ability to confidently explain complex policies to stakeholders and develop policies based on expert operational knowledge and consultation.

An appropriate tertiary qualification is desirable.
