Position Details

The Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV) was established on 1 November 2009 with the introduction of the Coroners Act 2008 (Vic). The Court is led by the State Coroner of Victoria.

The CCOV is an inquisitorial jurisdiction. Its role is to conduct an independent investigation into reportable deaths and fires, for the purpose of finding the cause of those deaths and fires. By its work, the CCOV contributes to the reduction of the number of preventable deaths and fires, the promotion of public health and safety and the administration of justice.

Having determined that a death is either a reportable or reviewable death , the coroner's investigation seeks to establish the facts to ascertain, if possible, the identity of the person who died, the medical cause of death and the circumstances in which the death occurred.  A coroner will also investigate some fires.

The coronial jurisdiction is a sensitive, demanding and confronting environment that attracts significant public scrutiny. CCOV staff are required to be responsive to a culturally diverse Victorian community and be prepared to engage effectively with clients in an emotional and distressed state. CCOV staff are required to have sufficient emotional maturity to manage exposure to material that may be graphic and disturbing. In relation to the work undertaken, adherence to the highest levels of confidentiality is a mandatory requirement.

Employees working at the CCOV may be exposed to challenging and/or confronting material and experiences. As the employer, Court Services Victoria (CSV) takes steps to minimise the impact and provides support mechanisms to all employees.

The Administrative Assistant for CPU coordinates the administrative functions of Coroners Prevention Unit (for example logging and exporting referrals from Coroners, ordering medical records and assisting with the preparation and recording of correspondence to request expert opinions). It also includes recording and reporting on information about reportable deaths, publishing Coroners' recommendations and responses to recommendations on the CCOV website.
