About Us

Fines and Enforcement Services (FES) is a division within the Police, Fines and Crime Prevention group at the Department of Justice and Community Safety. FES is responsible for managing the end-to end infringements system in Victoria and includes the Director, Fines Victoria and the Sheriff's Office of Victoria.

About the Role

As a member of the FES Legal and Commercial Services team, the Legal Officer will provide legal and commercial advice on a wide range of commercial, administrative and public law issues as well as litigation matters.
The Legal Officer will work closely with teams across FES to support the resolution of complex legal issues. Working in a complex and busy environment, this position requires the ability to operate with sound judgment and commercial acumen while managing competing priorities. This hands-on role provides the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to measures aimed at ensuring the Victorian fines system is effective and offers fair and equitable pathways for vulnerable Victorians.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated experience in commercial law, administrative law and/or litigation and dispute resolution
  • Ability to analyse complex legal issues, interpret legislation and develop accurate legal solutions
  • The ability to resolve issues through a deep understanding or interpretation of existing guidelines. Where guidelines are not available, the ability to analyse available ideas and take action through self, or in consultation with others to resolve problems. If required, the ability to determine additional information needed to make informed decisions. Also able to apply critical thinking and problem solving concepts in the right context
  • The ability to build a supportive and cooperative team environment, and engage other teams to share information in order to understand or respond to issues. Also able to support others in challenging situations
  • The ability to understand associated costs of operations and seek efficient ways of operating. Where external vendors are involved, the ability to ensure good understanding on engagement terms and hold parties involved accountable in delivering against agreement
  • Law Degree and admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to practice as a legal practitioner in Victoria.
