The Department of Justice and Community Safety 2020 Aboriginal Graduate Scheme is an exciting initiative which provides real employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates.

The department is now seeking Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander graduates from a range of disciplines and interests who are passionate about contributing to the future of Victoria's public sector. Successful completion of the Graduate program will ensure progression to an ongoing position.

What we offer

Our graduate scheme offers learning and development opportunities in an inclusive and supportive environment, which includes:

  • support from a dedicated Aboriginal Employment Team
  • access to the strong Aboriginal Employee Network and Aboriginal Youth Network (aged 18 to 26)
  • access to annual Cultural/Ceremonial and NAIDOC leave
  • access to the Aboriginal Career Development Program
  • and an ongoing full-time position upon successful completion of scheme.

Over the 12-month program, graduates will work on a number of current public issues, contributing to change across the wider community.

Graduate roles are available in the following work areas:

  • Information Technology (IT and related degrees or combined IT/Criminology degrees are      desirable)
  • Project Management (suitable qualifications include Business, Engineering, Law,      Science, Architecture, Construction Management etc)
  • Policy (Law, Economics or Arts degrees are desirable)
  • Generalist (suitable qualifications include Law, Arts, Business, Social Sciences etc)

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who:
    • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is accepted by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which you live or have lived in
    • will be able to verify your Aboriginality through a Statutory Declaration or a letter of confirmation.
  • have completed or be in the final year of a minimum three-year undergraduate degree (Bachelor or equivalent, or post-graduate studies)
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen with a valid passport
  • not have taken a VDP from the VPS within the past three years at time of application.
